Update: UN access to Syria
UN observers reached Qubair, after being prevented from reaching the area on Thursday. Qubair is a town in Syria’s Hama province where a massacre was carried out on Wednesday. The UN observers will try to determine what happened by finding bodies and recording eyewitness testimony. UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon warned earlier this week that the country is in danger of sliding into civil war.
“‘Thy will be done’ government” discusses how each of us, wherever we are, can pray to support political peace and stability in Syria, the Middle East, and the world.
New: Fed responds to Euro worries
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said this week that the central US bank would do “whatever necessary” to cushion the country’s economy from financial troubles in the Eurozone. The Fed is considering buying more Treasury bonds to encourage investors to buy stocks and other assets, and taking other steps to support job creation.
“An economics lesson from Elisha” explores an economic lesson from the Old Testament of the Bible. The story of the widow and the oil can inspire each of us to rely more completely on God’s guidance and spiritual abundance, no matter how complex the financial situation.
New: How social capital helps communities
Research suggests that towns with strong social ties – ones in which neighbors help each other out – enjoy an economic advantage over more insular communities. Places with higher levels of community altruism have lost fewer jobs during the recession than places with lower levels, because neighbors are able to pool their talents and assist each other through tough times.
“Drawn to good” discusses how the Christ, God’s voice speaking to His children, draws us together to support and uplift each other. Stronger community ties, and greater respect and compassion, are the natural results of our prayers!
