UPDATE: Europe weighs military intervention in Syria
As bloodshed continued in Syria, newly-inaugurated French President François Hollande suggested this week that military intervention shouldn’t be out of the question. But his remarks met with resistance in the US, Russia, and especially Germany, which is still sensitive to criticisms about its lack of military participation in Libya last year. One German spokesman suggested that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should be brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

NEW: John Edwards mistrial
Former US presidential candidate John Edwards was declared not guilty on one of six counts of misusing campaign funds; the judge declared a mistrial on the other five amid a jury deadlock. Edwards was accused of misusing campaign money during his 2008 campaign. This verdict, coupled with the Supreme Court’s 2010 “Citizens United” ruling, points to a more deregulatory approach to campaign finance, and sets a higher bar for what constitutes illegal activity in that sector.

NEW: SpaceX capsule splashes down
The Dragon space capsule, built by California company SpaceX, splashed down into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, completing a weeklong journey in which it became the first commercial spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station. The Dragon’s success may set the stage for future commercial space flights, and a future in which NASA would concentrate on deep-space exploration while private companies take over the role of bringing cargo and people to and from orbit.
