Eye on the world: Embracing rule of law

In an editorial titled “Afghanistan’s trial against fear,” The Christian Science Monitor writes that the March mob murder of a woman falsely accused in Afghanistan has galvanized that nation, challenging its “culture of official impunity, and a climate of instability” such that Afghanistan may be at a turning point for rule of law.

More ideas on this subject:

From Mary Baker Eddy: “The law of God is the law of Spirit, a moral and spiritual force of immortal and divine Mind” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 257 ).

Also from Mrs. Eddy: “God is the lawmaker, but He is not the author of barbarous codes” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 381 ).

In “True Government is Divine”: “We must resist the temptation to make a reality out of the abuses of man-made governments and to accept corruption, incompetency, injustice, personal favoritism of individuals or groups, and the other phases of error as any part of true government.” And, “... through the spiritually mental process of denying these lies concerning government and recognizing the truth concerning God’s righteous government we shall be doing our part to aid in the ejection of error and to bring out a higher expression of government.”

In “God the Only Lawmaker”: “Personal influence, fear, desire for power, avail not against the only lawmaker, God, who loves all and inspires all.” And, “Righteous government appears in the degree that those who share the obligation and benefits of human government realize the presence of true law, the law of Spirit, operating in and governing all conscious being, including the true individuality of man.”

In “Reestablishing respect for law”: “Never has there been a greater need or opportunity for spiritual thinkers everywhere to bolster respect for law by defining it on a spiritual basis—by practicing divine government in their everyday lives.”
