Eye on the world: Countering betting’s influences, maintaining integrity in sports
In an editorial titled “Protecting the purity of the Olympics,” The Christian Science Monitor commends the International Olympic Committee’s efforts to combat “the corrupting influence of sports betting worldwide,” such as cheating and sports fixing, observing, “Talent and teamwork should remain the purpose of any sport.”
More ideas on this subject:
From Mary Baker Eddy: “Success in sin is downright defeat” (Message to The Mother Church for 1900, p. 10 ).
Also from Mrs. Eddy: "The predisposing and exciting cause of all defeat and victory under the sun, rests on this scientific basis: that action, in obedience to God, spiritualizes man’s motives and methods, and crowns them with success; while disobedience to this divine Principle materializes human modes and consciousness, and defeats them" (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, pp. 267–268 ).
In “Sports and the power of integrity”: “When an athlete adulterates his or her ethics and integrity, the athlete is essentially looking for help from a false god—namely from dishonesty,” and, “In the long run, nothing beneficial results from selfishness and immorality…. So whether on the playing field of sports or on the broader playing field of human life, integrity and honesty can bring great happiness—the happiness of feeling closer to God.”
In “If it's not right, don't go along with it”: “No matter how the world values possessions and position, if they are ill-gotten, they do not bless.” And, “Because God is Truth, man's true selfhood is pure, incapable of deceit or corruption.”
