Eye on the world: A lasting peace for Colombia
In “Colombians reject peace deal with FARC. What's Plan B?” The Christian Science Monitor reports on the uncertainty that looms in Colombia after voters rejected the negotiated peace deal between the government and the guerrilla movement FARC (the Spanish acronym for Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia). “After a stunning referendum defeat for a peace deal with leftist rebels, Colombians are asking what comes next for their war-torn country.” The four-year-long negotiations tried to end a war that has claimed 220,000 lives and has displaced millions. There was “huge support for the accord among foreign leaders, who have roundly heralded it as a model for a world beset by political violence and terrorism.” However, “with only 37 percent of the electorate bothering to vote … Colombians’ enthusiasm for the ambitious accord was lacking,” and “the [referendum] campaign exposed deep rifts in Colombian society, dividing many families and making clear the road to reconciliation would have been long and torturous even had the accord passed.” For now, a cease-fire has the war on pause, but the defeated peace deal leaves uncertainty about how the country will move forward peacefully.
Ideas on this subject:
From the Bible:
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
From the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:
When we realize that there is one Mind, the divine law of loving our neighbor as ourselves is unfolded; whereas a belief in many ruling minds hinders man’s normal drift towards the one Mind, one God, and leads human thought into opposite channels where selfishness reigns.

The poor suffering heart needs its rightful nutriment, such as peace, patience in tribulation, and a priceless sense of the dear Father’s loving-kindness.

Related articles from The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel:
In “Achievable peace”: “True peacemaking is based on divine Principle, which calls for a deep trust and willingness to let God correct and govern, and which brings complete and permanent healing.” And: “Blessed is the man who makes peace in his own heart and in his own soul. Happy is the man in whom the inner warfare is diminished and finally destroyed. Peace is achievable individually, heart by heart.”
In “Triumphant peace”: “The peace of God Jesus gave the world is the dynamic, divine force of Love acting upon and through the human consciousness. This peace does not rest merely on the absence of war but upon the operation of the law of God. Neither can it be decimated by the warfare in men’s hearts and minds but must ultimately annihilate that warfare, bringing to light man’s inviolable relationship with God.” And: “In the light of Christian Science the triumph of God’s peace on earth is the inevitable outcome of bringing men’s thoughts into obedience to Christ. Prayer for this outcome is a prayer we may be sure will find an answer.”
