Eye on the world: A different response to terrorism

In “Terror in Tehran: Could attacks change Iran’s ISIS strategy? The Christian Science Monitor reports that “Gunmen and suicide bombers attacked two of the most significant symbols of the Islamic Republic of Iran Wednesday, killing 12 people in Tehran. … The so-called Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility.” The Monitor continues, “Despite its critical role bolstering local forces to fight ISIS in Iraq and Syria, Iran has been virtually immune to the insecurity and ISIS attacks that have plagued the region, from Libya to Afghanistan. But the shocking nature of the attacks—the first of their kind in the Islamic Republic for years—raises the question of whether and how they will affect Iran’s threat perception and anti-terror calculations.” Instead of reacting with retaliatory bombings, Iran’s response is likely to be diplomatic engagement with other countries to combat the influence of ISIS across the Middle East.
