The Editorial Board remarks on a researcher’s finding that generosity largely depends not on material circumstance or self-serving motives, but “... on a person’s perception of ‘living in a world of abundance, blessing, gratitude, enjoyment, security, and sharing.’ ” So, to encourage an atmosphere of giving—financial and otherwise—“American culture needs to stop pounding home a message of scarcity, discontent, and insecurity.”
