How do you know?

If you’re faced with a dilemma over whether to cheat on a really important test, or drink at a party where everyone else is drinking, or you’re wondering how far it’s OK to go with your boyfriend or girlfriend, what do you do?

Maybe you talk to a friend. Maybe you think back to what you learned in Sunday School. Or maybe you’re curious about how other Christian Scientists have dealt with these issues, so you look up articles on the subject on this website.

But my guess is that for most of us, these kinds of dilemmas come down to a conversation within ourselves—the tug of what we think we want, and all the reasons why, pulling against questions about right and wrong and received wisdom versus actual truth. Maybe that conversation takes another step and becomes a dialogue with God. In prayer, you ask for guidance. Or maybe you’re looking for the reassurance that whatever it is you’re about to do is the right step for you. Maybe you even think you hear that reassurance. But how do you know for sure?
