Discovering spiritual identity through sports

The February 2 launch of this year’s Six Nations Rugby Championship on the playing fields of Europe has set me thinking once again about the many ways in which a study of one’s relationship with God, especially as encouraged by Christian Science, brings purpose, clarity, and spiritual understanding to every activity in one’s life—including sports.

Many sports enthusiasts—whether participant, coach, or spectator—have found that such study helps them grasp and demonstrate the true nature of manhood and womanhood. This includes qualities such as courage, skill, creativity, energy, grace, beauty, and spontaneity. All these qualities have their source in God, infinite Spirit, and participation in sports provides a rich opportunity to express them, with due acknowledgment of and praise to God.

I’ve competed in many team sports, and have found that although the best coaches recognize the importance of proper mental preparation, it’s possible to improve your performance and deepen your enjoyment when your motive is to glorify God and not just to impress teammates, coaches, or spectators.
