Up to the mountaintop

Who doesn’t love to climb mountains, smell the pine and vegetation, explore new trails, look for wildlife, and reach the view at the top?

I hike often, so when I first moved to Vermont from Los Angeles, I asked around and was told where some of the best hikes could be found. Many of the mountains in Vermont aren’t very high, so I decided to hike up one of the highest mountains in the area—Mount Ascutney. I loved being alone in the wilderness, where I wouldn’t see another hiker for hours.

After several hours of climbing what I thought was the main trail, I reached the top and sat down on a rock to rest. When I turned around to go back, I suddenly realized I didn’t know how to get down the mountain and return to my car.
