Prayer about extreme heat

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

I’d been praying about the issue of climate, and heat waves, when I read in the news that the Middle East has been experiencing weather in excess of 120 degrees Fahrenheit. And the East Coast of the United States was also dealing with temperatures over 100 degrees. Reports highlighted concerns that accompany such temperatures, including the fear that electric grids wouldn’t hold up, and that extreme heat poses a health risk to the young and elderly. I was also alerted to the fact that crime increases when there are power outages.

I think it’s important to pray about these world issues and remove all the fear that surrounds them, replacing anxiety with trust in God’s promise from Genesis 1:31, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”

So I decided to do some research in the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, looking up the word sun. I especially liked what the Bible’s book of Malachi says: “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth” (4:2). This really started me on the right prayer-track.
