Let's talk turkey

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

In early June, my wife and I were working in our yard. We live in an area that has been literally carved out of the woods, and all sorts of wild animals visit us from time to time—possums, raccoons, snakes, turtles, foxes, coyotes, a wide variety of insects, and many kinds of birds.

This afternoon, our visitor was a baby turkey. She was very young—only a few inches tall. She was fluffy and could run fast. Baby turkeys can run almost as soon as they hatch.

We knew that mother turkeys are usually very good parents. As the baby stood in the flower bed peeping loudly, we sat on our front porch where we could watch her and yet be far enough away so her mom (and, most likely, lots of brothers and sisters) could come and take her away with them.
