Prepared with prayer—facing down Hurricane Ike

Originally appeared on spirituality.com.

When faced with the threat of destruction, as vividly described in the predictions, weather graphs, and commentary about Hurricane Ike as it heads towards the Texas Gulf Coast, I’ve found that nothing can bring the peace and wisdom needed to the human family like prayer. Of course, practical preparations and countless acts of neighborly kindness for those who are in the storm’s path are essential. But prayer is something each of us can turn to, even if we live thousands of miles away.

In order to pray effectively, it always helps me to know the nature of the Deity to whom I’m praying. Knowing that God is all good, possesses all power, and is “of purer eyes than to behold evil,” gives me a firm foundation for rebutting the idea that this storm needs to be a terrible “natural disaster.” There is nothing divinely natural about evil or destruction in any form.

Mary Baker Eddy, author of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and a deep spiritual thinker, wrote with supreme confidence in the allness and goodness of God: “No evidence before the material senses can close my eyes to the scientific proof that God, good, is supreme” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, 277). That’s a pretty radical statement, but one that we can take to heart in prayer. There is a divine law governing the affairs of men and women in perfect harmony. The proof of the supremacy of God’s goodness and power can be seen now, even in the face of the threat of Hurricane Ike.
