My grassroots answer to political upheaval

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

Months ago, non-stop coverage of candidates stumping for the upcoming presidential election in the US took me on a pretty wild emotional tour. You may know the tour I’m talking about. And I have to admit—before I gained some spiritual clarity—it wasn’t a fun ride!

When I first started tuning in to election coverage, I went from a place of deliberate ignorance and apathy, to an avid fervor for individual participation in the political process that was both tearful and angry. Worry and a feeling of helplessness when it came to the state of the nation and the world characterized my thinking at the time.

It seemed impossible to keep up with all of it—the stances on issues, the hopes and doubts I had about certain candidates, the rhetoric. What was a time of transition and new possibilities for the country, seemed to me to be morphing into a period of turmoil and confusion. Sometimes, I wanted to crawl into a proverbial hole and have someone let me know when it would be all over!
