Safe travel

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

Most of my life, I’ve had to travel a lot—on boats, steamboats, sailboats, trains, buses, cars, airplanes. Have I always felt safe in these vehicles? Yes, I have, even when circumstances looked unfavorable. I’ll tell you about one of those times.

I had flown from my home to a distant city to attend a business meeting. That night, the winds were so strong that they woke me up. Since I had to take another long flight immediately after the meeting the next day, I spent some time praying about these conditions.

I recalled a time when Jesus’ disciples were on a ship at sea, and saw the Master walking on the water toward them. Even though the conditions were stormy, Jesus’ awareness of his Father’s—God’s—presence and power enabled him to feel calm and safe.
