Signed into law in November 1983 by President Ronald Reagan, the national Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday is a celebration of Dr. King’s contribution to bringing equality to all people in the United States. In his speech at the Lincoln Memorial for the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, King urged America “to make real the promises of democracy.”
