The key of spiritual understanding

Something life-changing happened when a teenager was invited by his friend to visit a Christian Science Sunday School. In order to help this newcomer understand some of the fundamental ideas the class had been covering each week, the teacher asked him what he would think about a key that could unlock any prison in the world. That keenly interested the teen, who had a natural curiosity about how things worked together. So she showed him Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

Puzzled, he asked how a book could open anything. She said that everything we ever feel trapped by simply needs a right idea to unlock it. And this book is filled with right ideas about all that is real and true. That freeing power is spiritual and comes from God. Immediately, he saw the connection and brought the book home with him.

Every time I’ve heard my dad tell the story of how he was introduced to this textbook, I’ve been struck by the book’s description as a universal key. It begins by opening the Scriptures, taking a spiritual light to the Bible and showing how to unlock the healing and redeeming power of its pages. God is no longer distant and inscrutable, but always-present, unchanging Love, who knows us and is to be known by us. And to know God is key to understanding the solution to every human need. It is the Science of being, illuminating the benevolent and reliable laws of God that govern the universe.
