Universal Love’s embrace of diversity and individuality

Although we didn’t speak the same language, that didn’t stop the curious little boys from laughing and skipping around me as I made my way to the town center. On my return trip, they had disappeared. But after walking a short distance, I felt a little hand on each side quietly slip into mine. We walked back, smiling, in total silence, hand in hand. At the end of our walk, they broke away in a burst of giggles, shouting out, “Goodbye!” one of the few English words they knew.

God’s love for us overflows, opening our hearts to love one another. The memory of this encounter reminds me that countless glimpses of love reflecting God’s love happen every day. God’s infinite love is universal, utterly supreme over all, and each individual’s direct relation to God gives us something in common with one another, regardless of language, race, or culture. “ ‘God is All-in-all,’ ” Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “and the light of ever-present Love illumines the universe. Hence the eternal wonder,—that infinite space is peopled with God’s ideas, reflecting Him in countless spiritual forms” (p. 503).

These “countless spiritual forms” include an infinite diversity of how all spiritual qualities, such as joy, intelligence, and compassion, are expressed. Thought, uplifted by God’s impartial and universal Love, feels no fear, no strangeness.
