Healed of painful foot injury

Not long ago I was in an accident while driving at a go-kart race track. Five of us ended up bumping into each other. I seemed to get the worst of it with my ankle and foot between the kart and a barrier, and other parts of my body bruised by the kart. I felt quite banged up, and within an hour I couldn’t walk and was in a lot of pain. I was praying for myself, but the pain increased. So I texted a friend, who is active in the practice of Christian Science, asking her to pray with me. I didn’t tell her what had happened, but simply said I could not touch one foot to the floor because of the pain.

She sent me several helpful ideas about God and my identity as His child. A few of her texts focused on the thought that there weren’t any mortal personalities involved; that only God, Love, governed me. At first I didn’t understand the relevance of personalities to this situation. My foot hurt. I couldn’t walk. What did personality have to do with it? But I knew she was listening to God and telling me what was coming to thought as a result of her prayers. So I made an effort to listen as well.

I realized I was blaming the other people involved in the accident and that I had not thought of them lovingly or blessed them in any way. I was thinking of them as bullies, rude and uncaring. This was not true. After this incident I was quite shaken up, and one of the other drivers had stopped to be sure I was all right. I had said that I was. So why would I think they should have done more? They were showing care and compassion and could act only on the information I gave them. They had done more than I did. I hadn’t asked the others if they were all right. I was entirely focused on myself as the perceived victim, which was not at all in accord with Christ Jesus’ teachings.
