Our one and only Mind

Many readers of this magazine will be familiar with Christ Jesus’ statement: “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24). Accordingly, in Christian Science practice it is important not to think out from a standpoint of dualism—from trying to serve both matter and Spirit—but to recognize and serve Spirit, God, as the only reality. It is impossible for us to serve both matter and Spirit and at the same time expect to feel a true sense of harmony, fulfillment, and wholeness.

Illustrating the importance of keeping one’s thought true to God, Jesus added: “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? … for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:31–33).

There is in reality only one God, one infinite Spirit, or Mind, and we are the emanation of this one Mind. We need to realize more clearly and to understand more deeply what it truly means that the Mind which was in Christ Jesus is also our Mind, as the Bible states: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5).
