Safe in God

During the summer of 2014, I was abroad with some teens like me who are Christian Scientists. At one point I was feeling very sick to my stomach and was praying with anything I could think of. I was trying to correct my thought, to see that God was caring for me, but it looked as if things weren’t going so well. It was decided that I’d spend the night close by our group leader so I wouldn’t disturb my roommates.

The next day we were all supposed to go on a special trip to a waterfall. I was concerned I wouldn’t feel well enough to go, but decided to trust God, keep my thought filled with the truth, and not let error enter my thought. I’d worked with the Christian Science practitioner who had gone with us on the trip, and we’d talked about what we needed to pack in our backpacks each day. We had things such as water, sunglasses, and bug spray, so I decided to start thinking about what I needed to “pack” spiritually. I decided I could bring along a kind of “spiritual bug spray,” keeping myself safe and free with spiritual truths that could repel false beliefs—false beliefs that would try to creep in and intrude on my thought.

I had been thinking about this concept of “spiritual bug spray” throughout the trip, because of smaller things that were bothering me, and it had helped me enjoy my time with the group. As I’d prayed, I’d practiced rejecting any thought that would try to ruin the joy of the day.
