Employment needs met

Years ago in my early 20s, I found myself unemployed. Although I had been applying for months to many different companies, I could find no work. I was getting very discouraged in my search, so I called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful help and was invited to her home. After paying the bus fare, I would only have about five dollars left over for the rest of the week.

The practitioner’s home was lovely. My eyes must have been wide with amazement, because she commented upon greeting me, “Don’t be impressed by the grandeur of appearances.” We made our way to her office, where we sat and talked. She told me I was already employed and that my employment was secure with God. She reminded me that the only job I will ever have is to express the God-given qualities that are already part of my true spiritual being. Qualities like honesty, grace, kindness, patience, and compassion are mine to express freely. These qualities are manifested in me by God and bring an abundant reward.

I was honestly a bit disheartened at hearing this, as it sounded almost flagrant in view of my situation. At that time I reasoned that the practitioner misunderstood how desperate I was to find a job.
