The Bible Lesson in action

I was quite excited as I prepared for a vacation tour through China some time ago. However, just prior to departure, I received a letter from the trip leader stating that each of us could expect to get sick. This news added to some misgivings I was already addressing because of the trip being longer than usual for me and the fact that I would be far from home. I called a friend in my Christian Science association to pray with me while I was gone; we agreed that I would use the Christian Science Bible Lesson each day and she would pray for me, as well. Once on the trip, I applied relevant thoughts from the Bible Lesson to challenges as they arose, and I wasn’t disappointed in the results!

At the beginning of the tour, one of the travelers seemed to get a bad cold, and others followed. While they used various medications, I took daily doses of the truths of Christian Science through the weekly Bible Lesson, a Christian Science Journal I had brought along, and my daily prayerful treatments. One thought I prayed with from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy was, “All that really exists is the divine Mind and its idea, and in this Mind the entire being is found harmonious and eternal” (p. 151).

During this time I shared a small overnight train compartment with one who talked a lot about her cold symptoms. Very early the next morning while she slept, I read the Bible Lesson and prayed. I focused especially on the synonyms for God given us by Mrs. Eddy and found that certain words from the Bible Lesson seemed illuminated. For example, I realized that my health was always preserved because it’s a condition of Life, which I reflect, and that it is ever present because I am spiritual and Spirit is omnipresent. I also saw that I could rest in the peace of Soul, trusting my well-being to my oneness with God. I realized the truths I was understanding about myself were true of all God’s ideas, and I applied this knowledge and these insights to concerns about my family, my country, and the country I was visiting. With the comforting peace I felt came this thought from Science and Health: “Life, Truth, and Love are the realities of divine Science. They dawn in faith and glow full-orbed in spiritual understanding” (p. 298). I was very grateful to feel fine and went on with the tour in perfect health.
