No obstruction to omnipotence

Visual images have long been used to reinforce messages of power and authority, ranging from the Romans affixing Caesar’s image on coinage to modern media showings of a dictator’s collapsed statue. This Christian Science Bible Lesson, titled “Matter,” employs the biblical story of the fall of Jericho to symbolize the collapse of the belief of matter through the understanding of Spirit’s allness.

Early in the Lesson we find reference to the nothingness of matter and the need to demonstrate it: “Take up the stumblingblock out of the way of my people” (Golden Text, Isaiah 57:14). The Responsive Reading follows with a Thanksgiving song of praise for God’s redemption, supply, direction, and protection (see Psalm 107).

The story of Jericho’s fall to the invading Israelites in the first section reveals how Joshua both removed obstructions and praised God. The narrative also illustrates that his military success grew from his obedience to God. Instructed to encircle the city once daily for six consecutive days, Joshua employed both soldiers and priests, indicating Jericho’s wall would fall through a combination of courage and service, reflected in their distinct offices (see Joshua, chap. 6, citation 3).
