Divine Love's call to healing

A child asleep at night and having a nightmare may not be aware of his mother at his bedside, gently prodding him to wake up. Even so, when we are struggling with sickness, disease, or other difficulties, we may not be aware that our Father-Mother God, infinite divine Love, is right with us. Love is gently at work in thought, waking us up to our present safety and harmony in Love—a spiritual awakening that brings healing.

Throughout the Bible, there is repeated evidence of God’s purpose and promise to heal mankind’s ills. Christ Jesus showed the fullness of this promise. He demonstrated that God’s love is not just a comforting hand on the shoulder but the very power and presence of Spirit, the Holy Ghost, or Comforter. The divine Spirit destroys suffering by destroying the fear that we are faulty, material mortals struggling to work our way back to perfection or back into God’s good graces.

When a man, crippled for 38 years, explained why he hadn’t been healed yet, Jesus broke through that discouraged sense and told him to get up and walk. And the man did so, immediately (see John 5:2–9). Jesus must have perceived what the man did not—the man’s eternal wholeness as a child of God. The circumstances that seemed to prevent his healing had no weight or reality in the light of God’s love for him and the ability of that love to break the dream of disease.
