Lasting good

When I look back to relive my experience of Christian Science class instruction and how it has blessed me, there are always two things that stand out. They are things that have proved to be the foundation stones that undergird that most awe-inspiring experience and keep expanding in higher and broader spiritual expression and demonstration.

The first one occurred when I was leaving the home of my (future) Christian Science teacher after my interview. As he was walking me to the door, he asked me if I understood that Christian Science class instruction was not something I would be doing for myself. I took that to mean that it wasn’t for the purpose of having a better, more prosperous, more successful life, with fewer problems and trials—a pleasant human existence, etc. I had no hesitation in answering that indeed I did understand. I had always loved the accounts in the book We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, where individuals shared experiences they had with Mrs. Eddy herself. Many of these people had been in one of Mrs. Eddy’s classes. The hearts of these students were so full of love for what they had learned about God, man, and the universe of Spirit, that many very naturally went home and advertised their availability as Christian Science healers.

I intuitively knew from my prayerful preparation that class instruction would require me to broaden my demonstration of Christian Science to embrace the whole world. There would be no more just “me and mine.” This was a joyous, but serious, commitment to be a metaphysician working in the vineyard the Father was to unfold for me.
