A family led by a mother’s healing

Christian Science came to my family close to 90 years ago. We went on a vacation and stayed at what was then called a tourist home. While there, my mother fell ill, and my father decided to take her to the nearest physician. Before they left, a woman who was also a boarder told my mother that once they came back, she wanted to talk to her. She also asked if my mother believed in God. My mother affirmed that she did.

When my parents returned, the woman told my mother that Christian Science could heal her. My mother bought Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and liked what she read. Since a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, was located just a block away from where we lived, the following Sunday our mother enrolled all four of us children in the Sunday School. The very room itself seemed to shine with light and love, and what I learned there brought many blessings over the years to come. Mother was healed within a short time, and my siblings and I all continued to rely on Christian Science through adulthood.

At the height of the Depression, when I was in my 20s, I was desperate to find a job. In that day, employers would ask applicants about their parents’ background and religion. Out of gratitude for my Sunday School experience, I said that I attended a Christian Science church. People were discriminatory toward religions not their own at that time, and there were very few Christian Scientists. No one would hire me.
