Rejoicing in newness of life

For the Lesson titled: "God the Only Cause and Creator" from December 1-7, 2014

This week’s Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly is teeming with joy, and there’s good reason for that. Its title, “God the Only Cause and Creator,” confirms these reassuring words from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “God, Spirit, alone created all, and called it good” (p. 339, citation 1).

The Golden Text, “Be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create” (Isaiah 65:18), is magnified by its repetition in citation 7. And not only do we rejoice in God and God’s creation but God rejoices in us! “The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17, cit. 13).

But what about those times when we are overcome with depressing suggestions that we are separate from God and so cannot feel joy? We can take heart in the words of prophets quoted in this Lesson—Isaiah, Joel, Zephaniah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel—who all addressed dark moments in Israel’s history. They knew that if the people completely turned their hearts to God, they would surely regain their joy.
