Spiritual growth brings freedom from pain

This past summer I went to a Christian Science camp to be a volunteer worker in housekeeping. It was a joy to work with other volunteers who were expressing so much love by helping the camp run smoothly for children and families.

Partway through the week, following a cleaning session at the swimming pool, the volunteer workers were granted a bit of free time to jump in and enjoy the pool. I jumped off the diving board several times, but on one of my dives I hit the water in such a way that my head flung back, and I heard a cracking noise in my neck.

While I felt pain initially, it left quickly, and I really didn’t give it much thought. I was able to go on my way, though I did allow a small seed of concern about my neck to plant itself in my thinking, rather than praying about it to destroy the fear and belief of injury.
