Healed of dysentery

A number of years ago, I worked in the American Consulate in Alexandria, Egypt. At that time there was a Christian Science Society there comprised of a number of dedicated Christian Scientists of various nationalities. I was a member, and also served as the Second Reader and pianist.

Occasionally, I would go up to Cairo for a weekend. When a British member of the society learned I was planning such a trip, he said he would be in Cairo that weekend on business and asked if I would like to ride with him to what was then the British Canal Zone to see the Suez Canal. I thanked him and said that would be great.

The week before I was to go to Cairo, I came down with symptoms of amoebic dysentery, which was considered an “occupational hazard” of the country. I began praying along the lines of this statement from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive” (p. 463). I also really dug into that week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson, which was on the subject “Ancient and Modern Necromancy, alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced.” I was so inspired that the thought never occurred to me that a three-hour drive across the desert with few or no restrooms could be a challenge.
