At home in God's love

Recently, a piece of good news caught my attention. In spite of an economic recession and continued high unemployment, the number of chronically homeless in the United States has actually declined by 39 percent over the past several years. This positive development was spurred by a new approach for caring for the homeless. Instead of emergency shelters, housing assistance that helps provide people with a permanent home has proved more successful in keeping people off the street (see “A lasting cure for homelessness?” The Christian Science Monitor, January 30, 2012).

Home is so much more than a mere shelter. Everyone, no matter where they live in the world, wants to find a sense of love, comfort, and belonging, to dwell securely and safely where they are—to feel “at home.” A statement by Sentinel founder Mary Baker Eddy comes to mind: “Home is the dearest spot on earth, and it should be the centre, though not the boundary, of the affections” (Science and Health, p. 58).

In this week’s cover stories, Sentinel authors have given a lot of thought to the idea of home as a place where God leads you. Carol Gaetjen discovered that place while she was out kayaking one day (p. 8). And Michelle Nanouche, who moved from the US to France, found that she could be at home anywhere in the world because, as she says: “Love would never leave me without what I needed. Love was moving me forward to make new discoveries about my real home” (p. 6). This spiritual home can never be lost, or taken away from anyone. In fact, we can all discover more about being at home in divine Love every day.
