Shakuhachi

I used to play a Japanese bamboo flute called a “shakuhachi.” I quickly discovered that the quality of the tone I was able to get out of that instrument was directly related to my state of thought. If my mind was calm and focused, the flute sounded pretty good, but if I was disturbed about anything, I could hardly even get a sound out of it.

I could always tell whether my thought was in tune with God by the clarity of tone when I played that flute.

It was symbolic to me of what I’ve learned from Christian Science about the relation of our state of mind to the quality of our life and health. When thought is aligned with divine Love and Truth, this has a harmonizing effect on life. It can even result in bodily healing.
