A saving power in times of need

A while ago, I saw a bumper sticker that read, “America needs a faith lift.” That phrase caused me to think a lot about what’s happening today. Earthquakes. Tsunamis. Floods. Fear of nuclear radiation. Hunger. Impoverishment. These are just a few topics we see blazoned across headlines and hear about on the nightly news.

Dire world situations confront us, crying out for solutions on a global level. And, then, what about our individual lives? A job lost. A home foreclosed. Sudden divorce. Flunking out of college. A debilitating disease. How can faith help us out in times of great need?

The Bible assures us that we can turn to the Divine to guide us, to comfort us, to heal us, to meet our every need. Jesus put forth a promise, a spiritual fact, and gave instruction on how to see this actualized in our lives. He said: “Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? . . . for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matt. 6:31–33).
