The truth makes you free

A BIBLICAL QUOTATION that has intrigued me since I was a young Sunday School student offers inspiration on how to wage the battle against all sorts of oppression. It's Jesus' words, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32).

Truth is one of the synonyms for God that Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, describes in her textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. These names for God express different aspects of His nature: Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Life, Truth, and Love. Each affords different but complementary views of God's true nature. And collectively they provide clarity concerning His relationship to all people, not just a select few.

During class instruction with a teacher of Christian Science, I learned that Jesus' statement about gaining freedom by knowing the truth is the basis for healing every human problem. The phrase is a simple but formidable foundation upon which to build a spiritual understanding of our relationship to God.
