DEEPER COMMITMENT TO PRAYER BRINGS HEALING

In the summer of 2008, I was living the life I'd always dreamed of. I was a designer (and soon-to-be architect) for an up-and-coming and environmentally conscious architecture firm. At the time, I was in charge of a high-profile project for the City of Houston, one that I hoped would bring recognition to our firm. I had also just earned a real estate license, which I intended to put to use on a part-time basis.

The idea was that I could some day pursue a joint venture resulting in the development of green, low-cost, well-conceived projects that would become a new standard in design. I'd always wanted to make this kind of contribution to the world, and that was what had motivated my career choices.

One weekend, however, something occurred that I hadn't planned on. After a day at the beach, which involved a strenuous volleyball game and a lot of walking, I found that one of my feet had become quite painful. Having been a Christian Scientist for almost seven years, my initial reaction was to turn away from the thought of injury to the understanding of myself as a spiritual expression of God, and not a material organization of flesh and bones capable of being injured.
