A conversation with Kate Sims, Manager of Membership Records

UNITED WITH MEMBERS AROUND THE WORLD

In its most recent admission of new members this past June, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston (The Mother Church), welcome people from 33 countries and 19 different faiths. KATE SIMS has been Manager of Membership Records for The Mother Church for eight years. In her work she has been observing the trends in applications for Church membership and working to see that the process for application is timely and understandable. Recently, Kate spoke with the Sentinel's Managing Editor, Ingrid Peschke, and shared some of her observations.

First of all, Kate, what can you tell us about the history of Mother Church membership?

The first membership application around the year 1879 goes back to before there was even a church manual. The first form was quite basic and humble only an individual's name and address were required.
