Cut from the team

HOW could John not have made the seventh-grade soccer team? He had played soccer for as long as he could remember. Even his friends, who had all been selected to play, couldn't understand why the coach had cut him on the final day of tryouts.

He threw his backpack into the car and slumped down on the seat. "How was your day?" his mother asked. John swallowed hard before whispering, "I didn't make the team."

"I'm so sorry," said his mother. "What happened?" John had no idea. He thought he had played as well as always, but maybe his foot skills hadn't been good enough. Or maybe it was that penalty kick he had missed in the scrimmage. Or maybe the coach just didn't like him.
