A FAMILY PRAYS

Recently my 15-year-old daughter, Lauren, and I drove out of state with her soccer team for three subregional playoff games, all in one weekend. Near the end of the first half of the first game, my daughter left the players' side and walked toward me. She was nearly in tears. To see her out of a game in this way was unusual. I met her at the end line. She told me she had strained her thigh muscle and was in a lot of pain. She asked me to pray, as our family is accustomed to doing for healing.

We talked right then and there about the game being a good activity and about the fact that God, who created Lauren, created only good. The Bible states, "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Gen. 1:31). We reasoned that, as Christian Science teaches, because God is good, is spiritual, and the only power, there could be no evil—and in this situation, no pain in a good activity. Further that Lauren could count on that truth to heal her. She recovered her composure quickly and returned to the players' side just as the half ended.

Lauren stayed with the team, and I used my cellphone to call my wife to ask her to pray with us. Before the game resumed, I called my daughter back to the phone. My wife told me later that to help calm Lauren, she had reminded her that she was always in the arms of God's love and suggested they talk about what she was learning in Sunday School. Lauren said she was learning that there's one God, and that He is Love and is good. My wife assured Lauren that she'd pray for her, and that she could expect a fun weekend of soccer.
