LETTERS

It was good to be reminded of the uplifting words quoted from M. Louise Hoskins's poem "The Gate of the Year," in "My best weapons against fear" by Kate Dearborn in the October 3 Sentinel ["Justice for everyone"].

I well remember in the early days of World War II, when Britain stood alone against Nazi Germany, that King George VI ended his radio Christmas Day broadcast to the nation by quoting these lines, which brought comfort and inspiration to the thousands listening in.

Having been evacuated from London to live with my grandmother in Sussex, I was particularly thrilled to hear this poem read by the King, as Louise Hoskins lived less than a mile away, where she helped run a kindergarten school. But we, like many others, were not familiar with her poetry.
