The right job found me

About ten years ago my husband and I relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, so he could start a full-time graduate program at Washington University. Since I was our sole means of support, it was with some urgency that I began a job search.

But the area was in a recession, and I couldn't find a job in my previous line of work, which had involved testing computer software and hardware. In fact, I couldn't find any kind of a permanent job and had to resort to temporary work. Most of my assignments seemed to me to be demeaning and dead-end—I felt I wasn't using even a small portion of my skills or talents.

I continued to look for a permanent job, but the search went on so long that I really didn't know what kind of a job to look for anymore. I sent out many résumés, but I wasn't even able to get interviews. I thought that if I could just talk with an employer, he or she could see that I had a lot to offer, so it made me especially frustrated and angry not to get any interviews. I felt exhausted all the time. I even woke up every morning exhausted.
