We were running out of time ...

Peace in the face of pressure

There was a time in college when I felt under a great deal of stress and was running out of time. I was in charge of a major event that involved two dormitories. We were putting on an activity for the benefit of the whole college community. It was the first time such a major undertaking had been tried.

As the one in charge, I was dismayed to find that just two days before the activity was to take place, hardly anything had been done. Supplies hadn't been ordered. An important printing project had come out wrong. Those responsible for moving equipment hadn't even met to make plans. And, worse, everyone seemed to be at each other's throat. Finger-pointing and criticism were rampant. It seemed the whole thing would bomb, and I was sure I would be blamed.

No solution seemed possible. So I went out into the night, found a bench, sat down, and prayed. I asked God what I needed to know. A verse from the Bible came to me. It was the words of Jesus. "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth,these also doeth the Son likewise" (John 5:19).
