Glimpsing true womanhood leads to healing

When Mary Baker Eddy writes about womanhood, she always uses spiritual, not physical, descriptions. For example, a paragraph in Science and Health has the marginal heading "Ideal man and woman." In the text she explains, "... God made man in His own image, to reflect the divine Spirit. It follows that man is a generic term. Masculine, feminine, and neuter genders are human concepts" (p. 516).

This concept has been especially helpful to me as a woman athlete. Last summer I was particularly enjoying watching Women's World Cup Soccer. The qualities of dominion, poise, and strength the female players brought to a sport known worldwide as a "man's game" were inspiring.

At the same time as the World Cup, I was playing on a co-ed soccer team. During the course of the spring and summer seasons, my feet were injured three times, the last time so severely that I could barely walk for nearly a week. I was frustrated with the repeated injuries, and concurrent demands in my personal life and at work were causing me to feel a loss of control. The space and peace I needed to witness complete healing felt unreachable.
