Never off balance

There is a game children play. One child stands behind another who falls blindly backward. The idea is to trust the friend behind to catch the one who is falling. You can't peek as you fall to see if your friend is still standing there. You aren't supposed to break the fall with a foot or bend at the hip so there is a softer landing. Your body is supposed to remain stiff and straight, and your free fall proves your bravery and trust because once you lean beyond your balance point, there is no turning back.

If challenges in our lives appear to push us beyond our balance point, where can we place our trust with confidence of full support? The Bible urges: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Prov. 3:5, 6).

A story in the Bible (Gen., chap. 24) illustrates how certainly we can rely upon God. Abraham sent his eldest servant all the way back to the land of Abraham's family to find a suitable wife for his son, Isaac. Abraham sent with the servant ten camels laden with gifts and provisions, and gave him the assurance that God would send an angel before him so that his mission would be successful. Evidently the servant came to share his master's conviction that he would be safe and successful.
