Joy frees

In our tribulation
we must remember to rejoice.
Paul did it. He even
lifted up his voice and sang
in prison,
in the midnight hour.

Can we do less?
Let us confess
(in our prisons of poverty,
sorrow, loss, temptation)
we too can break the bonds—
however strong.
We too can break the bonds
with rejoicing
in our midnight song.

No prison walls can stand
before a joyful heart
making its melody
in praise of God.

Joy crumbles the walls,
breaks the chains,

sets us free.
