Beulah M. Roegge: Welcome to The Herald of Christian Science. Our guest today is Robert Holcomb. Bob, I understand that you had some struggles in your early days being committed to life.

Robert L. T. Holcomb: Well, I certainly did. I grew up in a very difficult situation. When I was born my mother had a nervous breakdown, and my dad thought that the way you got a woman's attention was to beat her. My first words were swear words. I was more familiar with the taste of soap than toothpaste because I spoke such foul language. It was a very difficult thing when my parents finally divorced. I think I went through the typical syndrome of thinking I was responsible. I was feeling guilty because I felt somehow I had brought this all about, and it was very challenging.

Bea: That could take away any desire to really live.
