Helping inmates find the freedom to choose a better way of life

Prison overcrowding, as well as publicity about inmate furloughs, gives new urgency to the issue of rehabilitation of inmates. As an administrator of an educational program in a high, medium security prison in New York State, Paula Jensen-Moulton brings some fresh perspective to the issue. Before she became what might be called a "principal" of a prison school, she worked as a teacher in the precollege program at the same facility.

Paula, what is a high, medium security prison?

New York State has minimum, medium, and high security prisons. A high medium would be just short of a high security prison, which houses inmates for life sentences, maybe several life sentences. The average prisoner in our facility is serving from two to ten years. Inmates come mainly from New York City or the other metropolitan areas.
