Christian Science came into my life when I was...

Christian Science came into my life when I was quite a young girl. My parents took me to the Sunday School of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, in Germany, where I grew up. From the very beginning I loved the teachings of Science and later found them a safe guide in life as well as the only fully satisfying means of finding answers to my questions about existence, God, and man.

During the trying years of World War II, my family found protection from fear and danger. We also had numerous proofs of the healing power of divine Truth in instances of sickness.

At the end of the war, food supplies were hopelessly delayed, especially in the big cities. We, therefore, supplemented our meager diet with berries and mushrooms found in a wood nearby. On one occasion I ate what I thought to be edible mushrooms. However, afterward I had all the symptoms of severe food poisoning, which made it evident that I had eaten some toadstools. I clearly remember going off by myself (no one knew of the problem). I walked up and down in our garden, praying and reaching out to God for help. I recalled Christ Jesus' promise (Mark 16:17, 18) "And these signs shall follow them that believe; ... if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them."
