PREVENTING AND BANISHING PAIN

In Christian Science we learn that all pain is mental, not physical. Pain is found only in the carnal mind, or, as it is also called, mortal mind. How can we prove that pain is mental? By this simple observation: When one falls asleep while in pain, he no longer suffers from it; yet, when he awakens, that pain often returns. It is evident, then, that to banish pain, one must know how to eliminate it from human consciousness.

Before we consider how to do this, we might well ask ourselves: "How does pain originate in consciousness? Why does one suffer from pain?" This discordant condition is often attributed to a disordered physical organ. Yet when we examine the reason for the disorder, we find that it is actually the effect of a false concept of man entertained in human consciousness.

All discord is the result of the belief that man is made up of material organs and is subject to change and chance, to birth and death, to disease and accident with their attendant pains. Also it is a fact that fear, self-pity, and the indulgence of false appetites and passions often result in discord, pain, and suffering.
