CHRISTIAN SCIENCE IN ATHLETICS

[Of Special Interest to Young People ]

To the Christian Scientist, athletics presents, as do other activities, the opportunity to glorify God. In his first epistle to the Corinthians Paul says (I Cor. 6:20), "Glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's." With the glorification of God as his objective the student of Christian Science is able to enjoy his athletic activities as he could in no other way, for he is increasingly freed from the burdens and limitations of the material senses.

The first step in mentally preparing oneself for his purpose of glorifying God is to correct the material sense picture of human activities, which depicts minds many and man as material instead of spiritual. One does this by strengthening his concept of man as a spiritual idea of God. This is essential, since God, Spirit, can no more be glorified in matter than honesty can be honored in dishonesty. The presence of one necessarily excludes the presence of the other.

Likewise, belief in a human will or in a material force must give place to the realization of Spirit's omnipotence and omnipresence, for as our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 275), "The starting-point of divine Science is that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that there is no other might nor Mind,—that God is Love, and therefore He is divine Principle."'
