SPIRIT IS THE ONLY SUBSTANCE

It is a basic premise of Christian Science that Spirit is the only substance and that matter is an illusion of the human mind. The false belief that Spirit is intangible and that matter is substantial obscures understanding of the true Science of being and is the source of all evil and discord.

Mankind has ever been aware of the imperfection of matter and has striven to improve its quality and operation, but it is only in recent years that physical research has reduced matter to force, which approaches agreement with Mary Baker Eddy's declaration in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 484): "What are termed natural science and material laws are the objective states of mortal mind. The physical universe expresses the conscious and unconscious thoughts of mortals. Physical force and mortal mind are one."

The conclusion that matter is merely a human concept solves only a part of the mystery presented by a belief in material existence. If matter is unreal, what is real? Happily, the answer was revealed in its entirety to the uplifted consciousness of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and was made available to this age through her writings.
